Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse

dreamliquidmousseRight about the time that Maybelline released their Dream Liquid Mousse, I was on the hunt for a new foundation so I thought I’d give it a try. The commercials were all over the place, claiming that the finish looked “air brushed” and that is how Maybelline describes it on their site. I hadn’t used a liquid foundation in years and, in those years, there have been a lot of changes in the makeup industry.

There’s a couple noticeable differences between Dream Liquid Mousse and the last liquid foundation I have used. First, it comes in a pump bottle, not the type where you just twist off and pour. This is less messy. There’s also a cap to put over the pump so you can travel with it. Overall, the bottle/packaging looks kinda shimmery and sophisticated.

Secondly, it’s “liquid mousse”, not just liquid. What I noticed is that it seems thicker and fluffier than liquid so you pump a dollop more than a river of makeup. I personally like this because it reduces mess and it just generally easier to deal with. Application is really smooth and easy. It’s supposed to be easily blendable with fingertips and I’ve never had problems with it. It defnitely doesn’t give that “mask-y” look that others do. Using a makeup sponge to apply would work fine as well, I think.

I really enjoyed the look of this. It was a medium coverage and generally evened out my skin tone nicely. I could apply a little extra for more coverage but it’s not a great product for thick coverage so it won’t work well for everyone. You can probably pair it with powder and/or concealer for heavy coverage. Overall, I was impressed by how health and fresh my skin looked from using this product. It was a noticeable change.

But would I call it airbrushes? Hell no. If you have seen airbrushed makeup, you know it’s hardcore coverage. It looks like paint, not makeup. I’ve also heard it feels pretty heavy, no surprise.

There seems to be some confusion about this and another Maybelline Dream product. The Dream Matte® Mousse comes in a small tub and produces a matte finish. Dream Liquid produces a wetter, dewey look and I used powder after it to tone down the shininess a bit. Because of this, I will probably try the Dream Matte when my bottle runs out, instead of the Dream Liquid.

There are some reviews online that say it causes break outs and, unfortunately, I have been breaking out more recently so it could be due to this or my face wash. Also, it is not as long lasting as some foundations. However, it feels super lightweight (Some people say it’s heavy but they must be nuts) in comparison to the Revlon foundation I had been using before.

All in all, this was a generally positive experience. I loved the look I got with this foundation but anyone who needs a heavier coverage or long lasting foundation (or who is prone to makeup caused break outs) might want to look for something else besides Maybelline’s Dream Liquid Mousse foundation.
