Great Value Dishwasher Detergent

P1011447I’m a fan of generic brands. Many times, the ingredients are completely comparable and the results are the same. Sometimes even better. And those dollars can really add up. Trash bags? Generic. Cold medicine? Generic. Pasta? Generic. And, because we live so close to Walmart and do almost all of our grocery shopping there, I pick up the Great Value brand more often than not. I was even impressed by its new, sleek white makeover. However, I cannot be impressed by the powered Great Value Dishwasher Detergent.

The biggest issue is with my glasses which have sort of decorative grooves on them. Out if the dishwasher, those grooves are full of solidified/crystallized dishwasher detergent residue which, while generally benign, is certainly unsightly. It is certainly much worse than water spots.

Secondly, despite rinsing off my dishes, there are always some food particles left on something. Usually, it’s my pans which are teflon coated anyway and are never that difficult to clean by hand. What’s up with that? I know there’s bound to be a dish or two which doesn’t come out perfectly spotless but it’s more like half the rack. Some positive reviews say that rinsing your dishes beforehand is unnecessary and even wasteful but I’m not sure rinsing, machine washing then hand washing is any less wasteful!

I’m almost done with ths box and I will be buying something else. I’m curious about Fresh Scent Dishwasher Gel Packs but after my experience with the powdered dishwasher detergent, I don’t know if I’m that bold! This is one knock off which isn’t a great value.

I’m fond of generic for some products, and some cleaning products, but I won’t go generic for dishes (dish soap, dishwasher tablets) or clothing (because clothes are so expensive!). I saw Walmart had generic dishwasher stuff and so did Target, but I passed them up for my usual Cascade.

Also, might I recommend that you *not* put your pots and pans in the dishwasher? The high water temp and abrasive dishwasher detergent can damage teflon coating, or cause it to leak fumes that might later leech into your food. I did a research paper on this very subject a few weeks ago, so I’ve been telling everyone I know to keep their pots and pans out of the dishwasher!

Wow. That is interesting, alarming and confusing. Makes you wonder why these things would be labeled as dishwasher safer when in fact they aren’t. Also makes it a whole lot harder to conserve energy by running a full load.

The GV Dishwashing powder makes a smell that will run you out of the kitchen. Has the same effect as sniffing ammonia or a diaper pail.
