I spend a lot of time thinking about SEO and writing about it. In fact, I spend more time discussing it that I wish I did. I spend less time actually optimizing my site than I do writing about it for work. So while I know what’s going on and recognize the value of SEO, I just don’t have the patience to dedicate as much time, effort or money to it as I would if blogging were actually my main source of income and not a passive source. This would be even more true if I were selling something here, which I am not. I mean, an ROI of over 500% is seriously good. It’s worth paying for, am I right?

I do participate in SEO in a couple ways, however. First, I use the uses an easy visual setting to let you know if you’re doing things right, and you can optimizing every post and page to within an inch of your life.  I also post all my updates to Facebook and Twitter. I pin some of my posts, if they’re especially good, and promote giveaways on Google+ as well as giveaway sites. This allows me to get backlinks, of course, and for Google to measure the success of my posts by shares and such.

I really don’t do as much search engine optimization, but plenty of people do. Many people in similar positions just hire it out. That’s why SEO is such a hot market right now. It’s kind of crazy. But, hey, it’s also a big DIY thing, and the fact that people want to read about it ensures that I have work to write. Win win, right?
