I follow many bloggers and pages like myself on Facebook, and today I read a post from an active giveaway site about how a winner had been contacted but hadn’t replied. This happens. This is exactly why I ask for mailing addresses in the giveaway form — so the winner always gets the prize and I can extend giveaways for longer without needing all the time for back-and-forth communication.
I announce winners on Twitter and Facebook, but I may not email you if you’ve won. Maybe it’s a happy surprise.
When I do have to contact winners, I always use email. There’s one major reason for this: Facebook privacy settings can — and do — prevent people from seeing messages from people who aren’t on their friends list. It can take me days or even weeks to see a message from someone not on my list.
As a giveaway host, I don’t feel like it’s fair for potential winners to miss out when they might not notice or even be able to check that other folder. Facebook apps don’t allow users to see the “Other” messages folder let alone access it. I have no idea how long mine existed with dozens of messages in it before I discovered it. So, I won’t do that.
If you’re a blogger, how do you notify entrants?
If you enter giveaways, how do you prefer to be notified if you’re a winner?
And what else would you change about giveaway winners?
