Avon Mega Effects Mascara

It’s been a while since I’ve written a review about a product that I purchased on my own. Last month, I went on a beauty products splurge, and one of the items that I purchased was Avon’s new Mega Effect mascara. If you haven’t heard of it, check out this picture to the side. It’s not just a different formula. This mascara uses a different applicator all together. Say “good bye” to the wand.

So this means the packaging is also different. It comes in a ¬†rectangular box, and the mascara itself is shorter and wider than any wand. It comes with a cover over the handle, which makes it friendly for travel. Because the applicator isn’t a wand that screws into the tube, it could potentially come out, and the cap is necessary.

Initially, it’s interesting to use. It takes a little force to pull the applicator from the tube, and you can tell that it’s scraping off excess mascara. There’s a thumb-shaped handle to grasp, and it has ridges to give you a good hold. At the end of the applicator is a wide brush made of hard plastics bristles. They point in various directions, which gives you better opportunity to apply mascara to your lashes.

The brush is wide and curved to fit along your eyelid. There are excellent photos here at Beauty Reflections. There’s a hinge in the handle so you can bend it to get better access. My initial thought is to bend it slightly and apply it straight on. This works well for the fullest part of my lashes in the center, but the brush tends to push my lashes up. Because the bristles seem a little shorter, I have to bring it closer to the base of my lashes, which results in mascara on my eyelids.¬†However, there are other angles you can try because of the way that the bristles are angled in different directions. This may even help you separate lashes.

So how’s the effect? Bold is a good word for it. Length and volume and darkness. This is not a natural mascara, but I don’t mind. Here’s a photo below:

Now, I like the effect. I’ve used this mascara quite a lot since I bought it. However, it’s not perfect. It’s not waterproof. This makes the mascara easier to take off, but it also means it’s not going to last all day. I’ve been wearing it with the eyelash primer that I got with L’Oreal’s Beauty Tubes mascara. This does make my lashes a little more clumpy and stiff than I’d like, though.

I’m itching to try this with a mascara top coat like this one from bareMinerals. There’s a bit of a learning curve so I think you have to give Mega Effects mascara more than a chance or two before you make up your mind about it.

I purchased this on sale for around $7, but the full retail price is $10. Overall, I think it’s a good buy, and I’m not the only one. All the ratings on the product page are 5 stars!

don’t like that its not waterproof, and by the looks of it I think I will stick to my bare escentuals mascara, or even covergirl.

The waterproof thing is a bummer — especially after a long day, but perhaps they’ll come out with that option. This really does produce a super bold, thick and lengthening effect, though! Covergirl doesn’t have anything that I’ve ever not hated.
