Beauty Box 5

Date Tue, January 14 2014

I never understood the appeal of all those subscrpition boxes before trying this, but now I think I do. You see, it’s so nice to get things in a sample size and try them on. If you don’t like them, pass them on. If you love them, buy some more! What you pay for a box is what you might pay for one or two of these products in full size. I know how much I hate buying new products that I don’t really love. They sit around and I feel like I’m been ripped off. Beauty Box 5, for example, costs just $12 per month. It’s a steal in comparison.

I was sent a box of goodies to review. The box included the following items:

I’ll give you a rundown of all the products individually.

Every Beauty Makeup Remover Pads

These are a thick pad that you activate with water. They contain argon oil and no alcohol so they’re better for your skin. The pads are different because they’re so thick. It almost seems like the layers will come apart, but they don’t. The package says that there may be color variances because it’s all natural, and you don’t have to rinse it off. I find this to be true and the slightly textured pads do a good job of removing makeup.

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion

I’ve heard good things about Aveeno, so I was excited to try it. The tiny bottle is perfect for carrying in your purse or bag. Even though I’ve used plenty of it, there seems like there’s so much more lotion left in it. I’ve been using it on my legs after shaving, and it makes my skin soft and smooth all day long. It does a good job of getting rid of that-post shave itch. It’s not quite as thick as the Norwegian Formula cream I tried last year, but that’s okay. It absorbs well and has no scent. I like it.

H2o+ Marine Hydrating Treatment

Face Oasis Hydrating Treatment

This product really took me by surprise. I’ve never used a moisturizer that was a blue gel, but here it is. According the description, it “delivers deep hydration while minimizing the appearance of fine lines with phospholipids, multivitamin complex and moisturizing marine botanicals.” I did like the hydration that I get from this one, but it’s one I would only put on if I knew that I was going to wear foundation. Otherwise, I’ve been sticking to my CC cream or my Proactiv+ moisturizer on days when I need to fight breakouts. I do like this product, though. It just has specific uses.

Nubar White Tip Polish

I was so excited to try this product. I’ve heard many good things about Nubar polish. The polish itself is creamy and thick, but it went on patchy. While it dried quickly, I needed more than two coats for an even, opaque appearance. This is not acceptable in my book. It would probably be okay as a base coat under another color. It would also work well to add designs to your existing polish with a toothpick. Of course, as the name suggests, you could top of your French manicure with this. I don’t do french manis, however. This is a good  case of how I’m not super upset. I got to try something new, but it wasn’t right up my alley.

Shimmer Powder in Storm

BellaPierre Storm Eyeshadow

The last product I was able to try was a full-size pot of eyeshadow. I’d never heard of Bellapierre before this. The glittery eyeshadow comes in the “shaker” type pot. I got the full size which retails for more than the prize of one box by Beauty Box 5. While the website shows an image of a very silver powder, this glittery powder has a slightly blue or purple hue. It’s very pretty, though perhaps not the best match for my green eyes.

While I love the color, the powder is just not as pigmented as I would like. I had to use quite a bit of product with my Mia Mariu brush and the effect was still pretty subtle. I would likely use this as part of a smokey eye look for a more dramatic effect in the future.

Unfortunately, this is not an all-day color. It was barely noticeable at the end of my night, and I hadn’t sweated, been in water or touched my eyes. I didn’t wear primer beneath the powder, which I will definitely do in the future.

If I had to rate my experience, I’d definitely give the box itself 4 out 5 stars. There’s a good variety of products that most people would like, and it’s definitely worth the price. Not every product is amazing, but I like more than I didn’t like!
