I’ve been curious about the pheremone diffusers that are supposed to calm cats for some time now. We considered picking one up, but they’re pretty expensive, and we weren’t sure if it would work. Luckily, I found out about a review opportunity from Vet Depot, and they were offering a diffuser up! The Feliway diffuser is one that they sell on their website, and there are also extra refills for when you run out. I received both the diffuser and an extra refill.
The purpose of this is to discourage marking and calm cats that might be displaying aggressive behavior or even scratching. It’s recommended for use in cars, after moving or when boarding.
Set-up is easy. The oil screws into the diffuser, which is spherical, with ventilation holes. I plugged it in and off it was. I can’t smell anything in terms of pheremones. However, this runs warm to the touch, and sometimes it smells a bit like melting plastic. Nothing is melting, but it just seems like the diffuser itself seems to be pretty poor quality, which is unfortunate.
Goliath especially seemed to attracted to it. I’d catch him smelling around on multiple occasions. However, I don’t know for sure if it’s affected their behaviors. The cat who does mark has been much better since she was spayed. There’s been no new marking since I installed it, but it could be a coincidence. The cats have been their happy selves, playing and rough-housing as usual.
I’ll definitely use this product until I run out of refills. However, I can’t help but think that animal pheremones might be akin to human ones in some products, in that they’re both a power of suggestion thing.
