Galaxy 20″ Box Fan

Date Thu, July 19 2012

It’s been a hot hot summer, and I haven’t been fairing too well. You already know this if you talk to me more than once a year, however. With a single window-sized AC unit, this apartment that faces the sun gets pretty hot. I’m slightly luckier than the roommate in that my bathroom has a window to create a small draft. I finally broke down and decided that I needed a box fan. I wanted to shove it in my window to exhaust the heat, so I headed to Wal-mart. The 20″ Galaxy fan was literally the only white box fan they had in stock, and it wasn’t even on its shelf. Some guy glared at me at the checkout, because he was stuck with a bright pink fan.

Packaging and setup were expected; although, the box would’ve been nicer if it had a hole in the top where you could grasp the handle of the fan itself. After I snapped the feet into place, we were good to know. I do want to note that the feet don’t exactly seem study. I’m surprised that this fan hasn’t fallen over, to be honest.

I haven’t been able to put this on my window, yet, mostly because my bed is up against the window and it would be more of a hassle for me. Instead, I’ve alternated between putting this in the patio window, which is too big to create much of a vacuum, or placing it around my bathroom door to help facilitate the airflow. The latter has been the most successful. On rainy nights, it really helps to move that cool air.

However, the fan doesn’t help as much as it should. I know that three-speed fans are nothing fancy, but this one barely seems to push air on the first setting and it’s really too loud to put on anything other than that. Fans aren’t the type of white noise that I really like or can stand, really, so I find this one to be a little disappointing. Perhaps I’ve just used more expensive box fans in the past. The roommate says it’s what you get for $15 but, to be honest, I expect more for my money. Call me frugal. It’s better than nothing, at least.
