Laconic Cotton Blazer in Petite

I’ve been wanting a blazer for a while but I knew I didn’t want one that was thick and boxy. That just wouldn’t be flattering for me. Fortunately, the Laconic cotton blazer that I was sent to review is neither of those things. It’s so thin, in fact, that it was stuffed in a tiny package that you almost wouldn’t believe there was a blazer in the package at all!

However, this also led to some wrinkles. The fabric does seem likely to wrinkle, and just hanging didn’t get them out. You’ll want to possibly iron or steam them out. I sometimes let clothes hang in the bathroom while I shower for this purpose.

And when I pulled it out, I was in love with the material. The cotton blend is almost like a microsuede — cool and soft to the touch. I also like the lining, which is a silky gingham pattern. You might want to opt for something warmer during the winter months (and we’re in the middle of the winter that never seems to want to end!) but this would be an ideal summer blazer!

However, sizing is a little less than ideal. I ordered by typical size — XL — according to the size chart. Converted to inches, this should fit about a 37″ inch bust. Maybe I was being a little hopeful, maybe Asian sizing runs a little small, maybe the blazer just doesn’t stretch like I’m used to or maybe it’s some combination of all three, but it just isn’t going to fit.

My main problem was with the arms. The cut is much thinner that I would have expected. Even if it fit, it would have been very tight across my shoulders. I did some measuring of my own:

  • Waist: 32″
  • Bust: 34″ to 36″
  • Upper sleeve circumference: 11″
  • Length: 24″

For the most part, the measurements were just shy of what they are on the product page. This happens, but I really wanted to love this piece. Of course, you might be able to make this work for you if you don’t button it. Sizing is always an issue if you order from a retailer like SammyDress, which caters to a different country. There’s always the risk.

The attention to detail on this blazer is nice. There’s a single button with some detail like in the photo. There are also real pockets on either side with flaps that do not secure. There’s also a faux pocket on the left breast.  The seams come in at the sides and flare out at the hips to give you shape and it’s in petite, so it’s perfect for shorter women. Because of the fabric you could roll up the sleeves.

It’s simple but sophisticated and ultimately timeless — except for the shoulder pads. They’re not super thick, but they arethere. I think you could let out a seam to remove them, but this isn’t my forte.

Because I do love this, I know it will make a fantastic gift for one of my friends. I’m not sure who yet, though.

Thanks to SammyDress, who sent me this blazer in exchange for my honest review.

I actually really like the look of this and but button(s) they used. It’s a shame it didn’t fit. Converting measurements sounds like a big pain, and with your experience I’d be worried that if I went to the trouble mine would be off-size too.

The button is cute! I love the feel of it. I had someone try this one who is normally a size small and it was only a TAD larger on her. The US vs Asian sizing is just, ugh.
