RavPower Luster 3000 mAH External Battery Review

Date Wed, March 5 2014

We’re part of a society that plays on our phones — and tablets — incessantly. I’m a tech savvy geek so I can’t complain. I love my new phone, too.

But the larger screens and better, faster processers mean that phones just don’t last like they used to. Remember when you could charge your old flip phone once a week? That never happens. Now, if I forget to charge my phone at night, it might die in the middle of dinner or game night at someone’s house. Sure, maybe I shouldn’t be playing on my phone — and I do try to put it down — but it’s obnoxious when it begins to alert me that it’s about to die.

For a while, I’ve been eyeing up external battery packs to provide me with emergency power. In fact, I did run across a few from RavPower so when they contact me for a review — and a giveaway that you’ll see coming up — I was all over that.

I received the Luster External Battery. This cylindrical external battery is available in 5 colors:

  • Pink
  • blue
  • black
  • gold
  • silver

I was sent the black, which you can see in the following photo.

I happened to have a roll of quarters lying around — yay laundry day. I thought it made a good size reference. RavPower calls this a lipstick charger, but it’s obviously a little larger than that. I wouldn’t consider it pocket-sized, especially because it’s a little heavy. It does come with a clip but, to be honest, I haven’t and won’t use it.

The external battery also comes with a USB cable with microUSB. That makes it compatible with all Android devices, Kindles and Nooks by default. There are two ports on one end of the charger. When you plug the microUSB end into your phone, you plug the regular USB end into the port. This begins charging your device. There’s not notification light on the battery itself, but your phone or tablet will show it’s charging via light or on-screen indicator per normal.

I’ve also plugged in miniUSB to charge my Bluetooth speaker and my Lightning cable for my iPod Nano, and they both worked.

I actually would like some notification because it’s difficult to tell when the external battery is running low without an indicator. I’ve used it a couple times, and the Luster died in the process charging. It wasn’t fully charged either time so this was expected, but if you don’t have an alert, you aren’t entirely sure when it dies, so your battery might stop charging on your device.

This external battery has a capacity of 3000mAH, which is about 1.5 times my current phone’s battery. My previous phone had a 1500mAH battery, which means I could charge it fully twice with the Luster. Obviously, I won’t be able to charge my new phone twice. Similarly, tablets have larger batteries so you won’t be able to fully charge them multiple times, but you will be able to sustain the battery level and charge enough that it doesn’t die before you get to an actual charging source.

The second port is so you can recharge the Luster itself, either from your computer or with a USB AC adapter. Simply switch the USB cable around and plug it in. While charging, there is a red LED light by the port. I’ve never actually charged it fully but I assume this turns off once charging has completed. I used to want one that simply uses AAs, but I think rechargeable actually makes it more useful.

There’s also a small button on this side, which turns on a flashlight on the other side. I’ll be honest, I didn’t even realize that this was also a flashlight to begin with. However, it’s useful, especially if I keep it in my purse. You can turn on three strengths of light as well as a flashing strobe, which would work well as an emergency signal in some situations. Because LED light really uses very little power, this will last hundreds of hours if you’re only using the Luster as a flashlight. Of course, this isn’t the point.

As an external or emergency battery, this one get my seal of approval.

The Luster sells for just $20. It ships within 24 hours when you buy it from RavPoer and you can get it on Amazon, too.

Thanks for this review. The lack of an indicator to know if the device is running low is a negative, but overall, this looks like a really good product.

I think this is excellent. We have a few power outages in the summer here, always, due to heavy storms. This would be a lifesaver.

I would hate the power outages.
