Amber Heard at the Golden Globes

Amber Heard at the Golden Globes

I’ve written a lot about style on the red carpet lately, and I think I like where fashion is  headed this spring and summer, save for all the gaudy bling, maybe. If you want to emulate your favorite star this spring at, say, prom, you’ve got plenty of options. I was recently browsing website JemJenHouse and noticed how many of the dresses for this year pay homage to what stars were wearing at the various award ceremonies —  Grammys, People’s Choice, CMA, Golden Globes — that have happened in the last few weeks. Here are

Amber Heard’s one-shoulder dress at the Golden Globes reminds me an awful love of this A-line dress — and they both are navy blue with high slits. The option at JenJenHouse is definitely a little more showy thanks to some jewels giving the impression of a sash around the shoulder and down to the hip. Both are super elegant and sure to make a statement.

The devil is in the details this year, and applique is everywhere. However, it’s done with a light hand so it doesn’t feel gaudy or dated. Julianna Margulies wore gold applique on black at the Golden Globes, and Rashida Jones went all out with a wild tree motif. A good example The Princess Scoop Neck Floor-Length Tulle Prom Dress With Ruffle Lace reminds me an awful lot of what Zosia Mamet wore to the Golden Globes with the black-on-white floral pattern.  Hers extended the whole length of the dress, but I like the change in fabric and color that this prom dress offers, instead. I think it could also work as a bridesmaid dress.

Lace on the red carpet

Lace on the red carpet

Lace was big on all the red carpets, and it’s here to stay in 2014. Delicate lace over the shoulders and down to a sweetheart bust was especially popular. There are plenty of options to be had at JenJenHouse that include lace shoulders, but the one that reminded me most of the red carpet style was Sheath V-neck Floor-Length Chiffon Lace Prom Dress With Beading  because of the long sleeves like Louise Roe wore to the Golden Globes. Margot Robbie paired her feminine lace with a pants suit at the Critics Choice Awards while Abigail Breslin showed up curves with lace sleeves on the same red carpet. Black and silver details make this a very sophisticated dress.

Other trends this year include:

  • Glittering gold and silver tones (look up Ciara at the Grammys) and black-and-white dresses (think Sarah Michelle Gellar at the Peoples Choice Awards).
  • Black this year offers more in terms of texture and finish. Leather and sequins are in! Leslie Mann showed this at the Golden Globes. PrintFaith Evans donned a stunning black dress for the Grammys.
  • Prints, like Kat Dennin’s dress as the People’s Choice Awards or Ariana Grande’s Grammys dress — are also coming back into style.
  • Bright, bold reds and deep blues. Jewel tones seem popular in general.
  • Belted dresses! Not my style but go for it if you have the figure!
  • Feathers and feather-like details. These dresses were all very whimsical. Danneel Ackles at the Critics Choice Awards used both bold blues and feathered details. The Mermaid One-Shoulder Sweep Train Organza Prom Dress With Ruffle Beading from JenJenHouse has the same feel.
