Rock And Roll with It

Date Fri, May 16 2014

Lately, I’ve been browsing a lot of retro sites (think InkedShop and RebelCircus) and sites with with clothing and accessories that have a pinup flare. It started with a one-piece bathing suit on Torrid, which featured a retro cut with a skulls and roses motif. The suit is no longer available, but Torrid offers plenty of styles like it, and my search isn’t done.

I need a pair of these!

I need a pair of these!

I recently had a chance to work with OASAP for some credits, which I used for the Skull Embellished Wallet and a braided leather bracelet featuring skulls. Both of them are feminine with a hint of rock and roll. Perhaps it’s a remnant from my goth days, but I love the juxtaposition of feminine and “hardcore”, or however you might want to describe the theme.

And it’s certainly appropriate for vintage styles like those you’ll see in modern pinup shoots. I don’t quite fancy myself to be a pinup girl, but I do love the retro style that this subculture, which seems to center around body mods and pinup art, continues to breathe new life into that sort of fashion. Adding a bracelet or ring or pendant featuring skulls of something similar really gives character to a look that might otherwise be forgettable or simply blah.

Currently, I’m on the quest for new shoes, and I’d really love some with a skull print. Converse has done a series of their shoes like this, but they’re all a little pricier than I’d like so I’m in the market for similar styles. Unfortunately, the soles of my shoes developed a hole much sooner than I anticipated so I don’t have a whole lot of time to shop for new kicks. Maybe I shall just buy some shoes that work for walking and keep my eye out for some sales.

I don’t know very many people who have a style like mine or even whether my own style stands out. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It gives me plenty of opportunity to hone my style as an adult and simply to experiment with skulls or lace or roses or whatever style strikes my fancy at the time, and who knows how long this fascination with retro style will last, anyway?
