Ah, the renegade “Z”. Somehow, companies think using it makes a word look cool when, in fact, it never has. This didn’t deter me from trying Butterfinger Snackerz. After seeing the commercial one too many times, I finally decided to buy a large bag of the bite-sized snacks. The bag itself contains many single-serving bags and each of those contains a whopping three or four bites of candy. Talk about a waste of packaging and, perhaps, money.

The snackerz are pretty good. There’s less filling than a Butterfinger bar itself so you taste more of the chocolate. It’s a little less chewy, thus less hard on the teeth and I do like that. But you know how they have them in a bowl in the commercial? That certainly wouldn’t happen unless you rip open every single package and who would do that? I find myself more irritated these days by unnecessary packaging and can’t see myself buying Butterfinger Snackerz again, even though they’re delicious.

Now, I’m not a huge fan of chocolate samplers which Ryan doesn’t know but I can’t hold it against him that he bought me one with my Valentine’s Day flowers – especially after that whole debacle. And, truth be told, the 12 oz. Whitman’s Sampler did have a few pieces I really liked but didn’t measure up over all.

This double layer assortment contains 15 pieces in 14 flavours on each layer including coconut, peanuts, caramel, almonds, cashew cluster, pecan/English walnut cluster, toffee chip (2), molasses chew, messenger boy, almond nougat, chocolate truffle, cherry cordial and Vermont fudge for a total of 30 “pieces.” I think that my main issue is I do not like soft-filled chocolate; however, I love nuts and toffee – crunchy thingy.

The toffee pieces were the first to go which is no surprise because Heath is my favourite candy bar. I’m glad they had 2 on each layer. There were several chocolate covered almonds and peanuts on each layer, which I also enjoyed. The cashew and pecan/English walnut clusters were good but the cashews were better. The “Messenger Boy” seems like a trademark of Whitman’s (I guess?) and were solid chocolate. I’m not usually a big coconut fan but these pieces were pretty good. The chocolate truffles, chocolate whip and Vermont chocolate were all okay but the rest were not for me. The caramel was especially strange – not what I was expecting at all.

Packaged in the typical yellow Whitman’s box, this isn’t the prettiest presentation. However, the flavours are all printed on the inside, top of the cover so you can know what is where. Because I don’t like many of the flavours, I don’t like surprise.

I did like a surprising amount in the Whitman’s 12 oz Sampler but I wouldn’t buy it for myself. I guess that’s why it’s a “sampler;” there’s something for everyone but not everyone will like everything.

Just a casual review tonight. I’m a huge fan of Ferrero Rocher candies which are a decadent, hazelnut treat. Evert holiday, the company releases some bulk packages of the candy which are usually shaped ‘decoratively.’ Ryan recently bought me the 32 count Ferrero Collection from Wal-mart, in the Christmas candy aisle. Not only does it include traditional Ferrero Rocher candies but 2 (new?) different kinds as well: Ferrero Roudnoir and Ferrero Garden. The former is a dark chocolate candy made with crispy wafer and coated in tiny chocolate balls (or something of the sort) which hides the inner creamyness and a bit of cocoa butter while the other is a lighter treat with a white chocolate-like outside, coated in coconut. The Garden variety has a cream center with a piece of almond. As a dark chocolate lover, I thought I’d like the Rondnoir best. I was wrong.

I am usually not a big coconut fan but Ferrero Garden candies are delicious and offer the same decadence as regular Ferrero Rochers. There’s layer after layer of ingredients which melt in your mouth and taste delightful on your tongue. The Ferrero Garden is a perfect blend of tastes. This is not something which is easily mimicked and I’ve always loved the Rochers for seeming just so, well, classy!

It’s not that the dark chocolate Ferrero candies are bad, quite the opposite. I just don’t think it help up quite as well as I would expect from the company and the cocoa butter center might be just a bit too much. I like the nuts, they add a little je ne sais quois. I also find that the crumb coating is very messy and little chocolate balls seem to get all over the place.

However, it’s a great package overall with half of the candies being Rocher. It would be a great Christmas gift or sometihng to set out at a party of to snack on over coffee. Ferrero candies usually come in clear plastic trays which exhibit their lovely foil packaging so the Ferrero Collection could easily be a centerpiece, if you wanted it to be.

Helpful Hint: Ferrero candies should never be eaten quickly, but savoured and nibbledd.
