So when I saw Kellogg’s Krave on the grocery store shelves, I thought “Hey, I want to try that.” There are two flavors, chocolate and double chocolate. On the suggestion of the roommate, I went with regular chocolate which has a crunchy, cereal outside and creamy chocolate filling.

The cereal itself is pillowy and looks similar to Cap’n Crunch, which I do like. I figured you couldn’t go wrong because I also like chocolate and I recently tried another filled cereal that was okay. The problem is, that there’s so much filling of chocolate that the shell is quite thin and this cereal becomes soggy very quickly. It has a somewhat grainy texture that becomes quite unpleasant when soggy. My mouth is not happy to chew this and it feels like there’s just a little too much creamy, chocolate filling for breakfast time.

It’s sad because it tastes okay. I’d eat it again if it didn’t have this weird texture but it does so I have no interesting in buying it again or trying the double chocolate flavor.

This isn’t as bad for you as I would think. One serving does have 10% of your daily carbs but cereal has always had a lot. There are 11 grams of sugar, of course. Krave also offers at least 15% of Vitamins A, C, D, B6 and B12, along with iron, folic acid and zinc so it’s not as bad for you as a candy bar.

Still, I can’t get over the texture. I like to eat my cereal while doing something else so the fact that this becomes soggy so quickly is a deal-breaker. There’s no way I’m going to go as crazy over this as the commercials think I will.

I love Cheerios. Cheerios are the shit, okay? And I have tried (and reviewed!) more than one type of Cheerios over the years. My most recent Cheerios encounters are with Chocolate and Fruity Cheerios. I figured I’d give you a fun, combination review of these products.

Fruity Cheerios come in a colourful box like its competitor–Froot Loops, except it comes in a drastically smaller box but I’ve already complained about that. d= Fruity Cheerios are smaller than regular Cheerios, I think. They’re much smaller than Froot Loops, too, and less rigid (Froot Loops hurt my mouth). While Froot Loops are covered in sugar, Fruity Cheerios are not. But they’re just as colourful and tasty. Fruity Cheerios might be slightly less sweet but the taste is shockingly similar, maybe even better!

Fruity Cheerios and Froot Loops differ slightly in terms of serving sizes: 1/4 cup to 1 cup, respectively. So while it appears that Cheerios have slightly fewer calories (100 vs 115), this may not be the case. However, Fruity Cheerios contains no saturated fats as opposed to 3% saturated fat in Froot Loops. Fruity Cheerios also have more potassiium. The rest of the ingredients are pretty comparable except that Cheerios has 50% DV of folic acid while Froot Loops contains 25% and 6% DV of phosphorous (Froot Loops has 0). I’m actually surprised that Fruit Cheerios aren’t better for you because they’re not coated in sugar but they do offer a few more nutritional options, if you care.

I’m probably what you could consider a Fruity Cheerios convert but Chocolate Cheerios are a different story. This cereal isn’t as similar to other chocolate cereals as Fruity Cheerios. They’re just not a sweet or chocolately as I would like. If you have a chocolate craving or a real sweet tooth, Chocolate Cheerios probably won’t hit the spot. They’re also far less tasty after they get soggy (what can I say, I’m a slow eater).

It seems like these tan and brown bites are good for folks who like only a little sweetness or really want an alternative to all the other chocolate cereals but.. I’d rather just eat some regular Cheerios and get my chocolate fix elsewhere.

If this were some sort of cage match, the winner would be clear. The box of Chocolate Cheerios would be lying on the ground, beat and slashed to bits, with pieces having spilled out all over. I paint a pretty picture, don’t I?

Of course, you may have different taste preferences than I do, in which case I’d say both are at least worth trying.

Essentially, I picked it up as a substitute for Apple Jacks which, for some unknown reason, have ceased being any good at all. Now, Apple Cinnamon Cheerios lack the bright green and orangey-red appearance. They look like Cheerios sprinkled with cinnamon. Gee, makes sense, right?

It tastes similar to the Apple Jacks I used to love, except that it’s definitely less sugar saturated. This isn’t a bad thing. It’s still flavourful but it literally tastes more refreshing. Despite the lack of sugar, it seems that Apple Cinnamon Cheerios has more fat, cholesterol and carbs, though not by much (only a few percentage points). Apple Cinnamon Cheerios does have more minerals and higher amounts of several vitamins/minerals than Apple Jacks.

In the long run, though, Apple Cinnamon Cheerios tastes good whereas Apple Jacks now taste like crap. I think you can guess which gets my vote. I just wish it came in a larger box like regular Cheerios.

Because Dez raved about new Banana Nut Cheerios, I thought I’d give them a try as I was our of cereal. Unfortunately, I was not impressed. I expected something like Cheerios with bananas on them and instead got an overly sweet cereal which smelled and tasted true strong of fake “banana flavour” as opposed to tasting like Banana. It tasted like banana product, after you add it to a recipe, rather than the subtle fresh Banana taste that I was hoping for. It is reminiscent of banana bread but not the fresh fruit itself. The commercials are wrong when they claim it’s the “great taste of real banana.” It’s neither great nor real banana tasting. On the bright side, at least the box was smaller than usual so I don’t have that much to eat.
