My aunt and I were recently discussing a certain online school which is basically in business because it pays off governors. Unfortunately, it’s really popular, too. It can be difficult to find online programs which are both affordable and quality. When browsing, it’s all too effortless to forsake high standards for the bottom line when comparing one online university with another. It only further adds to the frustration when the different degree programs from different institutions have different names for similar programs (or similar names for completely different programs!). These are only a few of the reasons it’s important to take your time when choosing the right school and program for yourself.

A long, long time ago in a Best Buy somewhere in town, Ryan bought me a Nintendo DS for my birthday. As it turns out, the WiFi has always been broken so that explains why I could never connect to any public networks. Regardless, I didn’t know and I just thought all those networks sucked. So when I discovered that Nintendo made a USB Adapter, I was excited. I could use it to play on my own network, however sucky it may be. Unfortunately, by the time word got around to me, Nintendo had stopped making it. I did find a WiFi adapter that was made in Japan but the consencus seemed to be that Nintendo stopped making their adapter cause the technology sucked in general. I mulled over the idea for months before deciding to go for it.

And now? I can play my Nintendo DS online. YEA! Well, not mine, really. Mine sucks. But I can play Ryan’s, and he can play his PSP or use his iTouch because of the PLANEX WiFi USB Adapter. Read the rest of my review.

I recently purchased a few shirts for myself online and knew I’d head to ThinkGeek.com. ThinkGeek is something of a marketplace for multiple vendors featuring different products that cater to the geeky crowd. The products are separated into categories such as T-shirts, Home & Office, Gadgets and Computer stuff. The T-shirts are all screen printed and include “message” tees as well as some with differing images. Tees related to computers, the internet and even Twitter. There are even Futurama shirts and, of course, I bought one.

Shopping at ThinkGeek is easy. It’s a clean and well designed site. If you like one item, you’ll likely find more that you like. Another benefit of shopping at ThinkGeek is their Geek Points – a system which rewards customers with different items. One must enroll into Geek Points because the system is not retroactive so I suggest doing that before you make your first purchase. ThinkGeek also allows you to enter coupon codes which I did to get a free Annoy-A-Tron (a neat little device which you can use to annoy people with its random beeping).

Because there are multiple vendors who use different producers for the shirts, it’s important to check the size charts and these charts are provided for everything. Some of the designs are also printed on different cut styles which is something I didn’t notice when I ordered. Despite checking out these charts, I was still surprised at how different the three shirts I bought were. They all had slightly different cuts and fabrics and are made by different companies. For instance, I bought this cute “I [heart] My Geek” shirt which is a super silky 100% cotton blend that has an incredible amount of stretch and feels cool to the skin. The classic cut OMG Pwnies shirt is printed on a basic Hanes cotton while the last shirt I bought, which features Bender from Futurama and is no longer on the site, was very slim cut and long. Unfortunately, that one is the most unflattering so I will probably only wear it under something else. Although this means that sizing will differ between the shirts you choose, it also means variety and you get entirely different products.

Of course, there is a plethora of other product for sale on ThinkGeek that range from interactive shirts run on battery packs, cute USB gadgets, stuffies, lights and clocks, candy and kids’ stuff. There’s really something for every geek on ThinkGeek.

If you’re looking for a degree in the It field, then you might consider the masters information security from Lewis University. The school offers two concentrations in the growing field of Information Security: technological and managerial. Students can study online, form the comfort of their own home and Lewis University promises competitive tuition pricing. Their website is well done and the school seems fairly legitimate but, if you know me, you also know that I am a little skeptical when it comes to a lot of online learning. (Of course, it’s what I’m doing myself, for the time being, but a lot of diplomas aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on). Still, it’s worth checking out.

And it probably won’t be the last either. Of course, since my last praises, Netflix has raised the bar again!

On the surface, Netflix seems like a nice investment. If you love to rent DVDs but have trouble returning it on time or rent them so frequently that your video rental bill is ridiculous, Netflix may just be the service from you.

Signing up with Netflix is easy and allows you to choose a different plan. Decide how many movies you want to have out at a time (here’s a hint, the more movies you have out the higher the plan will cost) from 1 movie to 8 and browse their selection of “more than 100,000 movies” to add promising titles to your queue. The titles at the top of the queue will then be mailed directly to your home (or local post office) without and shipping fees.

I personally use the “3 at-a-time (Unlimited)” plan which means that, at any given time, I can have 3 movies out without a deadline to return them. Unfortunately, this does include shipping times so as soon as the distributor mails a DVD is it considered “out” until it’s in their possession again. Still, if that’s an issue, you can choose up to 8 movies at a time and will be sure to always have a DVD at arm’s length. However, the customer doesn’t have to worry about paying shipping and handling when returnign the DVDs as a business return envlope is included; the actual mailing envlope you receive turns into a return envlope by tearing off a piece of paper.

I’ve used this same plan for over 2 years and have never noticed a hike in prices. In fact, the price has actually gone down – twice! Way to go Netflix!

Of course, I wouldn’t even be able to enjoy this service, like I have for the last 2.5 years, if they didn’t ship to military addresses. This certainly benefits anyone in a remote area when there’s nothing better to do or accessible to service members and their family.

In the last year, Netflix has worked hard to release an online viewing option so customers no longer have to wait for movies to be mailed. Instead, select titles can be viewed from one’s computer. Customers are allowed to view as many hours a month as they choose with no extra fee, unless they have enrolled in the 1 at-a-time (2 a month) plan, which allots customers 2 hours of movie viewing a month.

Netflix movies ship quickly. In lower WI, it averaged 2-3 business days from the time I dropped the DVD in the mail tot he time I received the next. Of course, those closer to distribution centers may have less time to wait and those not in the continental states will have a longer wait. Currently, in Japan, my wait time is about 1 week from the time the DVD is shipped (Netflix notifies customers whenever a movie is received and shipped) to reach my post office for a total of 2 weeks between the time I mail off DVDs to the time I receive them.

Netflix also offers some services for those who opt to receive movies in the mail. If a movie is lost in the mail, a customer can report it to Netflix and they will send a replacement immediately. The company understand that sometimes the mail can be unreliable.

Also, if Netflix sends a DVD that has been damaged and will not play, the customer can report it on the website and a replacement will be sent.

However, Netflix cannot return any discs that were erroneously sent to them which is easier said than done. I myself has sent back 2 DVDs by mistake.

Overall I’ve been very happy with service from Netflix. The prices are reasonable, much more so than renting the same amount of movies from a local store every week and the selection is vast. Every DVD I have wanted to rent has been available to me and very few DVDs are not available immediately. The queue works efficiently allowing one to find and add appropriate titles easily and keep track of DVDs rented and returned. Furthermore, Netflix offers tools to rate movies seen and offers recommendations based upon said ratings. Netflix is a great improvement over your local rental shop.

Anyone who is interested can leave a comment with their e-mail and I can invite you to join Netflix for 2 weeks for free!
