One of the nice things about apartment living is not having to shovel snow, mow the lawn or.. clean the pool. While a nice pool cover will help to keep it clear of debris, it would frustrate me to know end to have to go scooping out leaves and branches and the neighbor’s trash. And judging from how unlikely we Wisconsinites are to even use a car cover to deal with the downpour of snow in the winter time, I can’t imagine I’d actually follow through with using a pool cover, given the choice. I know, I know it would just result in more work for me when it comes time to clean the water and filters but that’s how I roll.

Never mind that, come Spring, I wouldn’t want to clean out the pool, before filling it up for the season, rather than just using a winter cover that’s intended to deal with the stress and weight of the snow. Of course, I find the idea of installing swimming pool liners simply because they’re pretty and allow you to feel like you’re swimming with the fishes — not in the mafia way — or visiting the long-lost sunken island of Atlantis. I’m the kind of person who likes things just because they improve the look of things of some of the pool liners can make a home pool look much more like those from resorts than an above ground installation.

Either way, I’m glad I don’t have to deal with it.

When I was younger, we never had anything more than a kiddie pool so we didn’t need pool supplies. If we wanted to cool off for the day, we went to the public pool but even that wasn’t a frequent occurrence when we lived out in the country. So when we did head to the pool, it was a pretty exciting experience. I remember we usually went with one of my aunts and her then-husband. We usually went to the pool that my mother now lives by and I remember spending time in the shallow, kiddie pool that featured some sort of a dolphin status in the center. I would occasionally visit a few pools over the years but I’ve never been a huge fan of swimming.

Coming from the North, I certainly spent less time in the sparkling waters of a pool that’s freshly cleaned with pool filters but it was an entirely different issue when I lived in Texas. Every complex had its own pool — I’m sure some had several — so it was easy to access a pool all day long. Ironically, I never stepped foot into the pool in my apartment complex because I’d just become so accustomed to not using a pool.

By warm, I mean in the the lower 70s which is the point at which I become uncomfortable thus uncomfortable to be around. Of course, it doesn’t help when I think these thoughts that will soon be heading to San Antonio, Texas. And then it doesn’t help when I consider all the large purchases we will need to be making: car, bedroom set, insurance, and whatever else pops up.

I’m sure some people cool their bodies and heads by taking a dip in the pool and even Ryan has been perusing some apartments with pools but as swimming is not my thing, I’m much more likely to be shopping for parasol than pool floats.

Still, some good things are sure to arise from this and I look forward to them. Visiting family will by a mighty bit cheaper, stores will be more, more varied and open 24/hours, restaurants of every type will crave my patronage and activities will abound.
