I used the same deodorant for quite some time before I made the switch to this Dove product. I thought I’d see if it would live up to the claims.

This unique anti-perspirant formula contains Pro-Epil Complex with natural extracts and Dove 1/4 translucent moisturizers. From first use, it smoothes and conditions your underarm skin. Within weeks, you’ll start to notice that your underarm hair feels soft, fine and easy to remove. Over time, your underarm hair will look and feel less noticeable. 24 hour protection.

Dove Ultimate Visibly Smooth

So, Cole, you ask, what’s the verdict? The verdict is not good. The one thing I like about this product is the scent: wild rose. I don’t know if it’s really floral or rosey but it’s a bit fruity and even a bit exotic (wild?). I would definitely buy other body products in this scent. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t stick around. This is absolutely not a 24 hour deodorant and sometimes I’d be hesitant to even call it a 12 hour one. I am often self conscious because it just doesn’t seem to last, even if I cake it on.

Which leads me to my second issue. It’s not clear at all. It definitely leaves marks on clothes. The Degree Ultra Clear Line definitely wins this contest, hands down.

But what we really want to know, is does it have any effect on shaving and hair growth or texture? I really wish I could say it did because I do enjoy the scent so much but, alas, I cannot. I am shaving at the exact same frequency, more than 6 months after I bought this product, that I have always shaved. The appearance of any hair isn’t noticeably minimized and, while I cannot say for certain that hair isn’t softer, I’ve never had to take a chainsaw to my underarm hairs to begin with. It was definitely one of the easier places to shave, in my opinion.

If it was an effective deodorant, I’d probably still buy it–just for the scent alone. But it’s not. Thus, Dove Ultimate Solid Visibly Smooth does not get the Cole Seal of Approval. While I love the scent, I’d only buy this product in the clinical strength and that costs nearly twice as much as other products, I’ll have to pass. And so should you.

It’s a pretty blatant advertising scheme. The manufacturer gives you on of the “better” models with the more inferior ones in hopes that you’ll get hooked and, the next time you visit the store, will purchase the more expensive one. Nice try Gillette, but it didn’t work.

I love that they keep making razor blades that fit on any Venus handle you have, though. I’ve only had 2 or 3 handles in the last.. 8 years. It’s the same with Venus Embrace so I used the handle I already had and put it on in the same way.

But the similarities end there. Venus Embrace is much larger than the previous Venus blades (regular and Divine) in both width and height. This occurs for a couple reasons. Embrace has an extra blade and the whole head is surrounded by a “ribbon of moisture.” It’s sort of like a mini Intuition but, thankfully, not that large.

Still, it’s large enough that it threw me off. With practice, I’m sure I’d get used to it but because I was used to the smaller blades, I found myself using the Embrace at the wrong angle more than once. This resulted in definite discomfort as the razor scraped against my skin in a weird way. And I’m not sure that the extra blade made much of a difference.

And the moisture ribbon was just annoying. It honestly felt more like plastic than anything else. Like any other Venus razor, it would offer some moisture for the first thirty seconds of shaving, then I would need to add shaving gel to help the razor glide. This same thing occurred the first two or three times I used the razor blade, because the strip would be able to soak up water as my razor sat in the shower unused. But after the first few uses, the moisturizing ribbon just seemed to quit working.

The other complaint I have is that the added size from the moisture ribbon makes it hard to get into all those little nooks and crannies when you’re shaving. Maybe not a problem with legs or the underarm area but it becomes more difficult around the bikini line and intimate areas because the edge of the blade is about .5 centimeters in from the edge of the head of the razor. It makes it that much harder to get the details.

I switched back to a Venus Divine cartridge before I really needed to because I was sick of hurting myself with the Embrace and it was just too bulky for my liking. It seems like other Venus customers agree because both the original and Venus Divine are higher rated on Gillette’s site for its Venus razors.

So let’s talk about Schick’s new Quattro for Women Trimstyle. You know I wanted even the male version when I saw the first commercial. You know I really wanted to buy it when I saw the one for us girlies. And I did. And I liked it. Here is what else you need to know:

Shick’s new tool is a razor and bikini trimmer called the Quattro For Women Trimstyle and it comes in a feminine pink and teal-ish package. The tool itself is the same teal and white so while it’s different from the pink of the original Quattro for Women, it’s still quite feminine. Although wider than the Quattro razor, it’s not unwieldy. Like the original, there is a little rubber button to rest your finger, right above the razor blade, but I found that this was not where my finger naturally rested.

The razor takes the same 4-blade replacement as the original Quattro for Women (so you can use any blades you may have) although the razor cap slides on from the end instead of over the top (this might be better. It seems more secure).

The trimmer is powered by 1 AAA battery which has a rather clever compartment. This makes the whole thing waterproof and since I am not a fan of dry shaving, this is good. It also means the trimmer can be cleaned up by running water over it. The Quattro For Women Trimstyle comes with a plastic holder which suctions to the shower wall but probably will not fit in the original shower holder.

The trimmer has an adjustable comb for 3 different lengths and can be removed entirely. With the comb on, I never worried about cutting myself nor did I find the trimmer to be too bulky. The comb was a little tricky to maneuver. It was easy to set it at the short or long lengths but the middle one was harder because the comb wanted to skip past that setting. Removing the comb can help for cleaning up any little hairs.

The trimmer is powered by a button on the handle. I found that, during shaving, I would occasionally bump this button. I think that would happen no matter where the button is located on the handle as long as it is that shaft and is the style it is. I would prefer a switch you push into an on/off position as opposed to the button.

My experience with Shick’s new Quattro For Women Trimstyle was pretty good. I don’t really like the tricky job of shaving my bikini area so I tend to let it go until I know something must be done. I don beekeeper style gear, grab a hatchet and set to work for long hours under the blinding sun. At least it feels like it. With the trimmer, I was able to trim several months’ growth of hair in 5 – 10 minutes so I looked presentable. This made the more precision shaving which was to come a lot easier. While there were a few straggling hairs which I missed, I think it was more my fault than that of the Quattro For Women Trimstyle.

The Quattro For Women Trimstyle never once caught on my hair or cut me. I could use the trimmer in either direction; although, the cut was closer it I went against the grain. The trimmer is not super quiet. It sounds like an electric razor and if you feel the need to hide what you’re doing, make sure to have the shower on or to be home alone. However, it was not ridiculously loud.

Ive always reviewed the Quattro For Women razor and while I like it, I wound up defaulting to my Venus Divine because I was sick of buying 2 sets of blades. One thing is for sure, the Quattro gives me a much smoother shave in some areas, like my bikini line and the back of my thighs but not in others (like my actually bikini area or legs). While shaving the bikini area after trimming, I did bring out my Venus to get a few hairs the Quattro seemed to miss consistently. I’m not sure what the rhyme or reason it for why the razor for so well.

However, I feel this is a strong tool overall. If you don’t have time to shave, the trimmer works well. If you like to do both, it’s 2 tools in 1. If you are like me and need to tame the lion, the trimmer is the first tool for the job and then you can go back for more precise styling later. If you run out of razor blades, a close trim will certainly tide you over. Now that I have the Quattro For Women Trimstyle, I don’t see myself ever needing to go into the jungle again. It will be much easier to consistently take care of the bikini area.
