Author: Joyce Mccall

I am a recent mother and have loved every second of motherhood. When the new show “Up All Night” previewed, I knew I had to watch it. It has now become one of my favorite shows. Some of the lines in it are corny and some are a little out there, but there are so many scenes that are right on the money. My husband and I were watching it one night and it was as if the entire scene was an exact conversation we had last week. I think the irony of the entire situation is that we watch the show late at night when we are up with the baby. Thank goodness for DVR. I do not think we would ever get to watch our favorite shows if it weren’t for that addition to one of our directtv packages. Even though we are behind, we are at least getting to watch them. It is amazing the changes that happen when you have a baby. They are all for the good, but it is definitely an adjustment.

Guest post written by Hannah Younce

I’m one of those Buffy geeks. I’m not afraid to admit it. So after that show ran for so many seasons, I can totally get why Sarah Michelle Gellar would want to take a break from doing something as intensive as a show and focus a little more on starting a family. But I was so glad to hear that she was returning to TV again! I really do miss watching her on Buffy and interacting with the rest of the cast. Her show The Ringer that she’s on now is very different, but I’ll take it.

I’ve been keeping up with the first few episodes of the show with my direct tv internet and I’m a little confused as to what exactly is going on with the sister that she thought committed suicide. However, I’m sure that I’m not supposed to understand that yet.

I think that this is definitely going to be a keeper as far as my fall TV lineup goes. I already hope that it gets renewed for another season, but it seems to be getting a positive response already so it probably will.

I miss having cable. I called a few satellite companies to get prices (which, by the way, were pretty good), the other day. I am looking forward to watching TV when it broadcasts and not on my computer because my monitor is just not awesome for watching TV or movies online. As an aside, DishNetwork had a much nicer call representative. The chick at DirectTV had a horrible, awful, ear-maiming voice and she was trying to get my credit card number before even giving me a price. Um, hello? I said I have questions for a reason. I have questions.

Anyway, I don’t follow a lot of television–although, Twitter has shown me that many of my friends are fans of Lost or Grey’s Anatomy and they have been watching all the seasons finales this past week–but I do enjoy a few TV shows. I just caught the last 2 episodes of NCIS which I thought were totally captivating (hell, I even cried at one point). I’ve been watching the full episodes on CBS’ website a day or so after they air (there have been a lot of reruns this year, though).

I’ve actually gotten into a few new series, too. Ryan has finally converted me into Supernatural and I have started enjoying Leverage, which I first caught on Netflix. I think I saw an ad which says it comes back this June (OMG, that’s next month! Where has the year gone?) so I’ll definitely be tuning into that.

I have to admit, though, that my interest in American Idol has totally faded due to lack of TV service. The site doesn’t broadcast full episodes. I can watch bits and pieces but I much prefer seeing performances, then critiques. And, anyway, Crystal sucks and should have been eliminated months ago but I honestly just cannot get past her appearance so I guess I’m biased.

Regardless, I miss TV.

I was watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition earlier and I really like the show as it helps out some good people and folks in dire straights and I usually tear up but Ryan is nice enough not to make fun of me.. too bad. And I had several thoughts that I usually have when I watch the show. One, of course, is that sometimes they just go too far. I know it’s “extreme” and that is what sells but just imagine how many more people they could help or how much money they might be able to save if they tone things down.

This home housed 8 people, I believe and sprawled like a mansion. I’ve noticed there’s a tendency for the show to build only single story homes and I’m not sure why but it definitely gives the impression that the house is much larger than it need be. In the end, there were 5 bedrooms. The parents had their master bedroom (of course), and a pair of girls and boys shared bedrooms while the other 2 children had their own rooms. Honestly, I think that shrinking the “great” room and building another bedroom or two would be ideal, especially in the future. 7 year olds can share a room with ease but.. 17 year olds? Not so much. And that’s another bone to pick. Most of these homes do not seem like they would fit the family well in the future. The bedrooms are customized to the max but peoples’ preferences change over time.

This episode, however, they did make some efforts to be more environmentally conscientious, which I like. I wouldn’t mind seeing that more often. Instead of a wood frame, they built the house with a steel frame, something of which I’d never heard. I got the impression that it was recycled from cars (maybe), instead of tearing down a forest and I imagine it might help make the house a little more fire resistant. Anyway, when the house was all built you couldn’t tell. It’s not like living in metal buildings. Another green thing they did was to have cement floors. There was mention that it might help with electricity bills, too, and that’s all well and good but.. it’s cement. It’s easy to clean, but ugly. It may save money but it will do hell on your body (many of our back problems are due to walking on pavement as humans were never meant to do that). It may be environmentally friendly but I bet it gets cold or slippery, when the weather permits. Plus it’s ugly. I honestly would be most displeased and spending money to add carpeting in that house.

Luckily, no one is building me a house. d=

I’m sitting here bored, playing Yahtzee on Pogo (I just won the round!). I’ve got lots of things to review but I just don’t feel like doing it this very second, okay? We bought a TV around Turkey day and it showed up at the end of last week. Ryan is very happy, I am.. getting used to it. You can expect a review of that, of course. I posted our old one on Craigslist and we got a call today which became a sale before heading off for Phantom’s annual shots. He was such a good kitty, it really made me happy. I’m starting to get sick again; my sinuses and throat aren’t so happy and it totally sucks. So I’m typing between blowing my nose and checking my junk mail folder (but there’s nothing good, just fake messages from Wal-mart and natural weight loss pills ads).

Oh! I’m looking for a nice set of flannel sheets in white/off white that can fit our 17″ mattress. Suggestions?

I’ve held off on things I wanted and would have been quite useful for years. Despite this, Ryan takes the time to show me TVs whenever we’re in the BX just because, if we do buy one, we’d save a bit on taxes there. While that’s true, our TV is certainly good enough and doesn’t need to be replaced yet. I can’t deny that a new flatscreen, LCD TV would be an improvement but I will hold out for the best possible price, even if it’s an unknown brand because.. I’m cheap like that.
