It’s hard to believe that it is almost Valentine’s Day. It has been a couple years since I celebrated one with someone I love but I am hopeful for this year. Even a single Cole is one who believes in a thing called love and who can look, fondly, upon the things she’s done for love. I take solace in the fact that few people can say they’ve flown around the world for love–multiple times–and I know that no one can say I haven’t gone the distance for love. Perhaps surprisingly, I would be completely willing to go just as far for love if the opportunity would present itself again.

Yesterday I bought a couple Valentine’s Day cards. I know they’re commercial and don’t know if they will all be well received but I like the idea and the ones I picked were either really cute or fitting. I’m a bit old fashioned, though. I don’t really like all the music playing ones but there are a lot. I saw one that actually played the damned Hamster Dance (don’t pretend you don’t remember it!) and this neat one where Scooby and Shaggy talk back and forth to one another but they’re ridiculously expensive, just like all the waxy chocolates that cost an arm and a leg and should come with a guide for a weight loss program, anyway. I figure there’s a card or candy that will do just as well or better for cheaper. I guess I’m just cheap that way.

It’s February already. That means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so Hallmark and Hershey’s will certainly see good sales these next two weeks. Although, extra brownie points can usually earned by more unique gifts and all sorts of websites are advertising their ‘gifts for her‘ these days so it shouldn’t be too hard that at least gives the impression that it was well thought out.

Assorted Disappointment

Now, I’m not a huge fan of chocolate samplers which Ryan doesn’t know but I can’t hold it against him that he bought me one with my Valentine’s Day flowers – especially after that whole debacle. And, truth be told, the 12 oz. Whitman’s Sampler did have a few pieces I really liked but didn’t measure up over all.

This double layer assortment contains 15 pieces in 14 flavours on each layer including coconut, peanuts, caramel, almonds, cashew cluster, pecan/English walnut cluster, toffee chip (2), molasses chew, messenger boy, almond nougat, chocolate truffle, cherry cordial and Vermont fudge for a total of 30 “pieces.” I think that my main issue is I do not like soft-filled chocolate; however, I love nuts and toffee – crunchy thingy.

The toffee pieces were the first to go which is no surprise because Heath is my favourite candy bar. I’m glad they had 2 on each layer. There were several chocolate covered almonds and peanuts on each layer, which I also enjoyed. The cashew and pecan/English walnut clusters were good but the cashews were better. The “Messenger Boy” seems like a trademark of Whitman’s (I guess?) and were solid chocolate. I’m not usually a big coconut fan but these pieces were pretty good. The chocolate truffles, chocolate whip and Vermont chocolate were all okay but the rest were not for me. The caramel was especially strange – not what I was expecting at all.

Packaged in the typical yellow Whitman’s box, this isn’t the prettiest presentation. However, the flavours are all printed on the inside, top of the cover so you can know what is where. Because I don’t like many of the flavours, I don’t like surprise.

I did like a surprising amount in the Whitman’s 12 oz Sampler but I wouldn’t buy it for myself. I guess that’s why it’s a “sampler;” there’s something for everyone but not everyone will like everything.

As February 14th draws to a close, I hope you enjoyed your day. If you were able to spend time with loved ones, I hope you did. Enjoy any presents you received and don’t fret if you were not someone’s special valentine this year; there’s many more to come. If you overindulged in champagne or truffles, you may feel a little guilt but before heading to the gym to work yourself into a sweat or googling to find out what the best weight loss pills are, remember that Valentine’s Day is ultimately about feeling good. And sometimes it’s okay to indulge.

I cannot believe there are only 2 days until Valentine’s Day. (On the bright side, this means I have survived over 2 weeks without Ryan. =() As you can guess, my V-day will be nothing special but I’m not one of those girls who expects flowers and a romantic dinner and jewelry and the whole shebang. Still, I wouldn’t mind having occasion to wear something a little special – like a corset I own – or even to go shopping for something new! Corset Diva carries a lot of big names in corsets, including Axford and Vollers and while they may be priced a little higher, those corsets will work wonders and last forever. I personally love the Red Devoire & Velvet Corset by Vollers. It could be worn with just about anything and look awesome.
