Transfer Domains from GoDaddy to Namecheap in 6 Easy Steps

Date Wed, October 23 2013

I stuck with GoDaddy for years simply because it was convenient, but rising prices and dubious ethics always made me wary of my registrar. When I finally decided to make the move to Namecheap, I was sure I would be able to work out any kinks but as it turns out, there were none to be had. The whole process was easy, and Namecheap even transferred my DNS settings because I host my website with another company. If you’re ready to make the leap, follow these instructions.

Transfer Your Domain to Namecheap

Purchasing from Namecheap

  1. Go to the Namecheap website. Click the “Transfer” tab, and type your domain name into the box. Press “Enter” or hit “Search.”
  2. Add the domain to your cart. If you’re checking out before 11/03, enter code “DOM2NC” for a discount. Click the “Checkout” button.
  3. Follow the prompts to register an account. Select your payment type and enter that information to purchase your domain. You’ll be taken to a confirmation page.

Starting the Transfer at GoDaddy

  1. Log in to your GoDaddy account. Hover over your name and click “My Account.”
  2. Click to expand “Domains. Click “Launch” next to the domain that you want to transfer.
  3. Scroll down to “Authorization Code.” Select Email my code. Click “Send.”

When your code arrives in your email, copy it to your clipboard. Return to Namecheap. Click “My Account” and select “Transfers In Progress” from the navigation. Under your domain, you’ll see an alert to enter your EPP. Click that alert. Paste your code into the box and press “Enter.” This begins your transfer.

You’ll see that your transfer is in the queue with the following alert:

Transfer in progress for [yourdomain]. No known issues at this time

Domain transfers can take several days after you put in the initial request.

Thanks Cole! I am thinking of transferring away from GoDaddy too – bit over their increasing fees on domain names :( I only really started registering with them because I had promo codes that brought the cost down super cheap.
